How to Choose a Design Agency: Europe vs GCC Selection Criteria

By Gaëlle Lamirault · May 2026 · 7 min read

Hiring a design agency in Europe and hiring one in the GCC are not the same exercise. The selection criteria that produce great outcomes in Paris will mislead you in Dubai. Here is what to actually evaluate, market by market.

After working both sides, the differences come down to five things: portfolio relevance, language capability, pace expectations, pricing transparency, and post-launch support.

Portfolio relevance vs portfolio prestige

European hiring overweights portfolio prestige — has this agency worked with Hermès, with Apple, with major luxury houses? Prestige is reasonably correlated with quality at the top tier.

GCC hiring should overweight portfolio relevance. An agency that has shipped 8 strong GCC brands is usually a better partner than one that has shipped 50 European brands and 1 GCC brand. Regional execution is its own skill set.

Language and cultural capability

European agency: confirm strategic capability and creative culture fit. Language is rarely the issue.

GCC agency: confirm Arabic design capability is genuine, not outsourced. Ask for samples of Arabic typography work the lead designer personally directed. Many agencies subcontract Arabic and call it bilingual.

Pace and timeline alignment

European agencies typically pace projects across 6-12 months. GCC clients expect 8-16 week timelines for similar scope.

If you are a GCC client hiring a European agency, force the timeline conversation upfront. If you are a European client hiring a GCC agency, accept that pace will feel intense.

Pricing transparency

European agencies often quote ranges and refine over weeks. GCC agencies should quote fixed scope at fixed price upfront.

If a GCC-based agency cannot give you a fixed proposal within 7 days of brief, that is a quality signal — they are improvising.

Post-launch support reality

European retainer culture means many agencies offer 6-12 month support packages.

GCC project culture means support is often transactional and additional. Negotiate post-launch support upfront or expect to renegotiate when issues arise.

Frequently asked

Should I hire one agency for both Europe and GCC?
Only if they have demonstrated capability in both markets. Otherwise, hire two specialists with strong handoff.
What is the right budget for a GCC vs European brand identity?
European: EUR 30k-200k for SMB-enterprise scope. GCC: AED 50k-600k. Premium positioning carries premium pricing in both.
How important are agency awards?
Awards correlate with quality but with diminishing returns above the top 50. A non-award-winning studio with 3 strong relevant case studies usually delivers better than a heavily awarded studio with 1.
